This year the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) market, which is much like an IPO (Initial Public Offering) but without the often debilitatingly expensive and in-depth auditing processes, has not only taken off but has provided startups a tremendous fund raising opportunity at a time when public interest is peaking.
The prominence and ballistic growth of ICOs in 2017, where a percentage of the cryptocurrency is sold to early backers of a project, is shown in the below chart from Coinbase:
However, as speculation around the future of the various blockchain-driven cryptocurrency markets grows, the New Year will likely bring greater interest and regulation from regulators here in the UK and abroad.
The Initial Coin Offering market is now valued in excess of $4 billion (£2.96 billion).
