“One of the huge mistakes people make is that they try to force an interest on themselves. You don’t choose your passions; your passions choose you.” – Jeff Bezos

By Ed Emerson

Took one of those “Find out if you’re an entrepreneur” online tests today.

Wanted to see if I had what it takes to “be all Branson”.

Half way through, got bored and wanted to change it around into something a bit more…unexpected…(that must be a good sign, right?).

Maybe some multiple choice questions. Some with a bit of grit.

The truer to an entrepreneurial life once lived, the better.

Try these:

Question 1 – What was your second wife’s first name?

A) Passive Aggressive

B) Candy……I mean, Linda.

C) I only remember her lawyer’s first name.

Question 2 – Why did your first three business ideas fail?

A) I’m not sure I understood the question.

B) They may have lacked a certain market je ne sais quoi.

C) Hey, those were pre-H.P. (Hair Plugs). And that’s like Fight Club. We don’t talk about pre-H.P.

….and then, the really important one…

Question 3 – How many business or consumer headaches out there did your product cure?

A) Hey, we’re tech not pharma.

B) Headaches? Reminds me of my second wife in that first question.

C) Are those M&M’s in that bowl on your desk?

And so on…

The Millions Who Need You…

If you really want to know whether or not you have the crazy gene, you might want to try a more practical approach.

Think about something that annoys you, and millions (preferably) of other people out there just like you.

Go on. It’s easy.

Like crap internet connections on cruise ships, umbrellas that don’t work in high wind, why there’s no quarantining “delay button” for social media posts sent during emotion-fuelled binge drinking sessions, or car seat backs that lack any scratching device for those unreachable 2-inch square patches between your shoulder blades.

So you want to be an entrepreneur?

Never mind the online assessments.

Get annoyed about something, and then get to work fixing it.
